+ Masu McLemore.
THE IN MY SKIN PROJECT SERIES & MASU.
l. WHAT IS YOUR NAME AND WHERE ARE YOU LOCATED ?
M - I'm Masu "Artbysu" McLemore. Born and raised in Inglewood, California.
II. WHAT DO YOU FEEL IS YOUR CALLING IN LIFE ?
.M - I know for a fact that my calling is to inspire others, That's why God has given me the many talents that I have. I think I'm here to enlighten others, specifically because you rarely see black female artists in the art world, and I want to change that. I will change that.
III. WHEN DID YOU REALIZE YOUR SELF-WORTH AND HOW HAS THIS JOURNEY OF SELF-DISCOVERY BEEN FOR YOU? WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED THE MOST ABOUT YOURSELF ?
M - I realized my self worth at the age of 20. I was in a toxic relationship for 5 years and once I ended it I began to fall in love with myself. This journey has not been an easy one. It took me a while to love myself and I realized what I deserved and what I am worth. It took a little over a year to just enjoy me and I learned so much about myself. Being positive and loving and caring is who I am. Acting like I didn't care, being negative, and nonchalant not only affected me but it affected my work and my fans. Now that my being has changed entirely, the positive vibrations are never ending and to be honest I thank my ex for that. He opened up my eyes to things I didn't need and if it weren't for him I wouldn't have learned a valuable lesson and have everything I truly need today.
IV. HOW HAS YOUR STRUGGLES HELPED YOU TO BECOME A BETTER WOMAN ?
M - My struggles and mistakes have humbled me immensely. I've just learned to trust the energies of the universe and go with the flow of things. What you put out into the world will come back to you. So I stray away from negativity now because at one point it consumed me. I appreciate my struggles.
V. WHO OR WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO CREATE ?
M- Music motivates me. Honestly, if I could sing or produce beats I wouldn't be an artist, I'd be a musician. Everything about music and the rush it puts through you really gets me going. Kendrick Lamar is one artist that really motivates me beyond words. I'd honestly love to work with TDE or Soulection some day.
VI. WHAT IS YOUR LONG TIME PASSION ?
M - My long time passion is to be a mother and a wife. That's when I'll truly be happy with life, I feel that's my true purpose as a woman.
VII. IF YOU COULD GIVE ANY TIPS OR ADVICE TO THE YOUNG GIRLS AND WOMEN AROUND THE WORLD WHO SUFFER WITH LOVE AND ACCEPTING WHO THEY ARE, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ?
M - Stop comparing yourselves to others. It's hard not to with social media but remember that being the same as everyone is not fun. Whether you have long hair, short hair, wear weaves, wear wigs, rock your hair natural, have a natural body, got work done, skinny, thick, YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL. Don't let the worlds standards dictate what's beautiful to you and remember at the end of the day nobody can love you more than you can.
VIII. WHAT DO YOU FEEL NEEDS TO BE TOLD TO OUR BEAUTIFUL WOMEN OF COLOR? DO YOU FEEL THAT WE WOMEN OF COLOR HEAR THOSE WORDS OFTEN? IF NOT, WHAT CAN WE DO AS A COMMUNITY TO CHANGE THAT?
M - As black women we're rarely told that we matter. Yea, we uplift one another via social media but not many of our own black men do. And most of it is only on social media. Black women need more credit and recognition for everything we have done and created for not only our community but for the world. So to any black women reading this, remember, YOU MATTER.
